Potential Funding Sources for Your Home Modifications

There are many organizations which will provide financial assistance for handicap accessible home remodeling and modifications geared towards aging-in-place. Area Agency on Aging PSA2 - (West Central Ohio)
Serving Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby Counties. Can offer small contracts for home repair services targeted to seniors who are most in need. Able to provide some home modifications to older persons who are enrolled in their PASS- PORT program -- Ohio’s Medicaid waiver program.

Veteran’s Administration Home Adaptation - Grant Program
“The goal of the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant Program is to provide a barrier-free living environment that affords the veterans or servicemembers a level of independent living he or she may not normally enjoy.” An application for the SAH program can be found online at : https://vip.vba.va.gov/portal/templates/page/html/sahInfo.jsp

Department of Housing and Community Development - (CDBG Grants)
In some cases, home modifications to improve accessibility may be covered under Community Development Block Grants. Eligibility for these loans varies by community.

Centers for Independent Living
Centers for independent living (CILs) are private, nonprofit corporations that provide services to maximize the independence of individuals with disabilities and the accessibility of the communities they live in. Among other things they can provide information and referrals on how to get funding for assistive technology in your area.

Ohio Assisted Technology (AT)
Assisted technology is defined as “ ...any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities” [29 U.S.C. 3002, Section 3 (a)(3)]. AT Ohio’s mission is to help Ohioans with disabilities acquire assistive technology and offer several programs and services to achieve that goal. While they do not provide funding directly, they can point you in the direction of the program that best fits your needs.

County Corp Accessibility Assistance Program
The Accessibility Assistance Program provides assistance to homeowners/renters in Montgomery County outside the cities of Dayton or Kettering, who have a member of the household with physical disabilities or seniors with age related disabilities. The level of assistance is limited solely to the amount required to address the modification. The maximum amount of assistance is $5,000. The assistance is provided in the form of a grant.
